Introduction:

Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as Digital Eye Strain, is a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged use of digital devices. The symptoms of CVS can include eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, neck and shoulder pain, and even double vision. 

The prevalence of CVS has increased significantly in recent years, with estimates suggesting that up to 90% of computer users experience some form of eye strain or discomfort. This condition can have a profound impact on an individual's quality of life, affecting productivity, concentration, and overall well-being. 

Pathophysiology of Computer Vision Syndrome: 

The pathophysiology of CVS is multifactorial and involves a combination of factors related to the use of digital screens and lifestyle habits. One of the primary contributors is the high visual demand required when using digital devices, which can lead to eye strain and fatigue. 

Factors such as glare from the screen, poor lighting conditions, and incorrect viewing distances can further exacerbate the problem. Additionally, the reduced blink rate associated with prolonged screen time can lead to dry eyes and discomfort. 

Lifestyle factors, such as poor posture, lack of exercise, and inadequate breaks, can also contribute to the development and aggravation of CVS symptoms. 

Recent research has focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms of CVS, including the role of accommodative and vergence dysfunction, as well as the impact of blue light exposure from digital screens on circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. 

Ayurvedic Understanding and Management of Computer Vision Syndrome: 

The symptoms of computer vision syndrome are compared with Sushkakshipaka, a disease affecting the entire eye according to Ayurveda. It is a disease caused by the increase of both Vata and Pitta. Its symptoms include foreign body sensation, pricking and splitting types of pain, dry and uncomfortable eyelids, inability to open the eyelids, extreme dryness, and tolerance for cold things.  

Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach to managing CVS, focusing on restoring balance among the doshas and promoting overall eye health. This approach involves dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, and the use of specific Ayurvedic therapies and medications. 

Dietary Modifications: 

Ayurveda recommends incorporating specific foods, herbs, and spices that are believed to be beneficial for the eyes and overall vision. For instance, consuming foods rich in antioxidants, such as amla (Indian gooseberry), turmeric, and green leafy vegetables, can help protect the eyes from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. 

Lifestyle Modifications: 

Adopting a balanced lifestyle is crucial in Ayurvedic management of CVS. This includes practicing stress-reducing techniques like yoga and meditation, ensuring adequate sleep, and engaging in moderate physical activity. Additionally, implementing proper ergonomics and taking regular breaks from digital screens are recommended to alleviate eye strain and fatigue. 

The 20-20-20 principle may be employed here. It entails looking at an object twenty feet away for twenty seconds, along with taking twenty steps backwards and forwards, every twenty minutes of screen time.

Ayurveda offers various therapies and medications specifically formulated to improve vision and promote eye health.
